Turkish Dervishes ‘whirl’ into Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE – A religious tradition from Turkey makes its way to Baton Rouge Tuesday night.

The performance of the Whirling Dervishes is supposed to convey God’s spiritual sift to anyone who witnesses their ritualistic movements. The tradition dates all the way back to the 13th century!

They’ll only be in Louisiana for two days, and people who’ve seen them in action say this is something you don’t want to miss.

“It’s a very unique way of praising God, so we wanted to bring them to Louisiana and are very thankful we were able to bring them to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans,” Emrah Aktepe says.

The Dervishes will begin whirling at the BREC Independence Park Theatre tonight at 7 p.m. You can get tickets by visiting the park’s website or calling (225) 216-0660. Tickets are $20 each.

They’ll be performing in New Orleans as Loyola University tomorrow, as well. If you can’t make tonight’s performance, visit the Event Brite website for tickets to Wednesday’s performance.
